Now.

Basically, this is it. The last four years of my life have led up to this day.

From the depression after Bush’s reelection.

From the journey and experiences during my trip around the world.

To the long political organizing of the past year, from Iraq Summer, to Obama, to Sierra Club, all leading up to this day.

Our moment is now. What happens today will define my life, whether the next four years will spent in the wilderness, or we can finally work to fix the problems in today’s world and make progress, rather than trying to merely trying to defend what we have.

Yes we can.

Presidential?

There’s only one candidate who’s Presidential

Liveblogging Rudy and Sarah

7:57 – I’m trying to visualize the Vice Presidential debate. My only fear is that Joe Biden will come of as too chauvinist. It’s almost like a setup, where something he says will come out as being offensive to Palin. Kinda like how John Edwards comment about Cheney’s lesbian daughter became the big story about the VP debate in 2004. We shall see.

7:50 – Crowd sounds loud, but then I look, and it looks so timid. This feels like the country fair versus Obama’s professional Disneyland. Well, maybe that’s nit the best analogy.

7:45 – My first impression – she’s a good speaker. Reminds of a mean elementary school teacher, one whom I can just tell doesn’t really know anything except how to talk with authority.

Does that make me a sexist?

7:30 pm – Rudy recap. So all three of the losers came out, though I don’t recall hearing anything about
“party unity” here.

7:26 pm – Doesn’t this speech feel like nothing more than the reshashing of a Hillary Clinton speech? None of the barbs against Obama are fresh, and as a result, they won’t get picked up by the national narrative.

This Historic Day

I’m heading to a Democratic Party event tonight to watch Obama’s historic convention speech. Photos and more tomorrow, but tonight, let’s enjoy history being made.

Conversely, I’m really confused by John McCain’s latest TV ad.

Our First Step

12 1/2 months ago, I stepped foot on American soil for the first time in over a year. I wasn’t wearing a flag lapel pin, and my passport had stamps from some rather unseemly countries (Turkey, the Emirates, Malaysia, to name a few), my hair was long, and I was going to live at home. But I knew then that, even though I had just finished a trip around the world, with experiences that I’m only now starting to understand, I was starting a far grander journey.

The journey to change America.

Last night, we took a powerful first step in that direction.

I travel with a slightly different perspective than most travelers. The world is a patchwork of disparate peoples, each with their own dynamic and fascinating history – and I only wanted to tap into this great collective of knowledge. So I went, from the picturesque battlefields of Gallipoli, where the seeds were planted that led to the great ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia only a decade ago. I visited the remote kingdom of Nepal, where the rapidly changing weather patterns were wreaking havoc on subsidence crops (a precursor to the food crisis today, I now realize).

I realized what power I had – I was from America. Six years of Bush had taken it’s toll on me, but I still believed that I could make a different. I just hadn’t tried hard enough.

Change isn’t easy. And last night, we took our first step towards Change we can believe in, and for the world, an America they can look up to once again. The next step – beating John McCain.

McCain vs. Clinton, an Electoral Disaster

Hillary Clinton vs. John McCain. The most hated, partisan Democrat versus one of the most independent, well liked Republicans. A race we can win?

I’m not talking about the reality of either candidate here. I’m talking public perception. And I’m not talking about ridiculous General Election polls. But we face a real choice soon, so who we want Representing out party this fall, and who can win in the fall. Right now, the two most likely nominees look to be John McCain versus Hillary Clinton. And I see some real problematic issues for Democrats is this is the race this fall, and I will elaborate below.

I believe that Hillary Clinton facing John McCain is a potential electoral disaster for Democrats this fall. And this is why, no GE polls included, just cold, hard facts and projections.

Jobless Republicans to Save America!

Anyone ever notice how most of the Republicans running for President do not hold current positions? They’re unemployed! Does that mean anything? No! As George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan have proved, hard work is a vice. While they might not have jobs, while they might not have to vote or take stances on the pertinent issues in Congress or in their states, I can prove to you that each of them has been working tirelessly in the public service. And, just for clarification, by public service, you mean obvious self interest, right?

Crossposted at MyDD and DailyKos
First up, we have FORMER Senator Fred Thompson. He left the Senate in 2003 to work one of the most pressing issues facing America. Solving crime. On television. As a dedicated public servant. Fred Thompson has worked tirelessly in Hollywood to make sure that we have something to watch on syndicated television until the end of time. Without his work, imagine what Must See TV would be like? Cringe.

Don’t forget the estemed FORMER Mayor of New York City, Rudy Guiliani, who stepped down back in 2002, just six short years ago. Since leaving, though, he’s continued to save New York City from the abyss by speaking all around the country about himself, action, and 9/11. He also started a website and…ugghh…did another speaking tour. Throw in a few shady Wall Street deals, Middle Eastern Business ties, and you got yourself the next President of the United States!

But wait, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Governors are in the House!

First up, FORMER Governor Mitt Romney. At first glance, his four years as Governor seem to be an abberation from a lifelong career of raking in the dough, with his sons to assist him by not fighting for their country, but fighting to make Romney President. If that’s not selfish, then I don’t know what selfish means. In reality, giving up business to become Governor was merely a stepping stone to the most lucrative job in America – President. After deciding to avoid certain re-election defeat, and waiting nine long days after stepping down, Romney announced he was running for President. The next two months were spent flip-flopping to match the stances of Iowans and New Hampshirans. Massachusettes agrees!

But wait. Is that a bird? A plane? Jesus Christ? No! But close, its FORMER Governor Mike Huckabee, the Christian from Hope, here to wish us Merry Christmas, raise our taxes, and remind us that the majority of founding fathers were clergyman, and that Satan himself threw in that annoying clause about “Seperation of church and state.” If this wasn’t a Christian nation, then why else would the founding fathers have never told us anywhere in the Constitution? His logic is unmistakable, unquestionable, and Presidential.

And the others, the ones with “jobs?”

Of course. I can’t forget Senator John McCain, who hasn’t left the Senate to pursue a career of glory on television, or to achieve riches on a perpetual speaking tour, or to let god let him win the nomination. But with his second place ranking as having missed the most votes of any Senator (blasted Senator Tim Johnson and his “brain hemorrhage”) its obvious that McCain’s “job” is nothing more than a label, and that he’s as tied to public service as his esteemed colleagues running for Senate.

As for the Congressman (Ron Paul, Tom Tacredo, and Duncan Hunter)? Where better to push your pet issues (Austrian economics, hatred of brown people, and “my border fence fantasy”) than in the crazy, “loco” House of Representatives? Now that’s called working for the American people.

With candidates working this hard to make America better, what more could you ask for?
