My Time is Now

On April 19th, 2007, I, for the first time in 13 months, set foot on American soil. I planned it like this on purpose, to travel for a year, experience the world, volunteer in third world countries, grow as a human being, then return just as the political season was getting heated up. It was less than nine months until the Iowa Caucuses.

On November 2nd, 2004, I, like many of us here, was devastated. Another four years of George W Bush? My idealism and my innate belief in my own ability to change the world had taken a serious beating, and the floodgates were open leading to the dark waters of cynicism.

Yet, the very next day, as people began to face the truth, I faced reality in the eye and made a vow. That day, I wrote this:

This is horrible. Yesterday I felt like everyone was angry alongside me. Today, though, that number has shrunken dramatically. How? Yet not so surprising. But this election has ignited a fire inside of me – in 2008 this will not happen again because I will be actively involved and actively working to ensure it.

I feel – more powerfully today than even before the election – that I can make a difference.

Now, with four years of experience behind me, 2008 was here. I was ready to go, and three weeks later, I was zipping down I-70 towards Chicago, on my way to Camp Obama. I’d found my candidate – Barack Obama – I saw in him the hope and potential to move America past the failures of the past.

Kansas goes Blue

At least in caucus turnout.

The Democrats, who caucused during a snowstorm in 50 locations statewide.

Total Turnout: 36,695

The Republicans, who caucused on a sunny Saturday morning in 68 locations statewide.

Total Turnout: 19,133

52% Higher Turnout for Democrats in a state that went 62-37 for Bush. Barack Obama (26K) had more people caucus for his than all the Republicans combined.

And people still ask me why I think Obama is the most electable? Imagine if the weather had been nice, and the Democratic party more organized.

Supporter Driven Money Bomb

Obama’s #1 day of fundraising was the day after he lost New Hampshire.

I think today might have broken that record.

Check this out – in response to Hillary’s self-donation of $5 million.

Baracking the Kansas Caucus

Caucusing in Kansas: Aussie Football to Iowa’s Croquet

Last night, I was swept up in a sea of change in the most unlikely of places. Suburban Johnson County, a diehard, Republican area where Democrats rarely fare well. But last night, something amazing happened. We caucused.

I was up in Iowa and attended a caucus there. Yesterday, I caucused in Kansas, and the contrast between the two couldn’t have been greater.

One was lightly attended, full of mostly white, suburbanites, with an Obama precinct team of about 5 people, and ended in less than an hour.

The other was hectic, with long lines, horrendous overcrowding, lengthy waits, and diverse, multi-ethnic crowd, and over 20 Obama volunteers.

More on the flip.

Scorecard

My voice is croaky from shouting at the Kansas caucus, and trying to get the huge turnout of 1,600 people signed in and organized in a room that was prepared to hold maybe 400 people. It was, I have to say, quite the experience.

States: (bold designates a swing victory)

Barack Obama: Connecticut, Georgia, Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Alaska. TOTAL – 13

Hillary Clinton: Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, California. TOTAL – 8

To Be Called – New Mexico.

Looks like Obama was most of the toss-ups, but the story still remains seems be the almost perfect tie in delegates. All depends on how much ground Obama can make up in California once they stop counting absentee votes (at 25% reporting, both Edwards and Guiliani were at 10%)

Super Tuesday Projections

As you might know, I’m a bit superstitious. And I support Barack Obama. So, I’m a little wary to make any predictions about the Democratic Primary for fear of jinxing Barack.

However, I wanted to point everyone towards this excellent, well researched, and incredibly enlightening Super Tuesday projection from Poblano over at DailyKos. His generous predictions are forecasting a slight victory for Hillary Clinton. The only thing I would add is that, if as Poblano predicts, Hillary gets 37.5% in Kansas, I would be shocked.

[UPDATE]

I’m gonna go ahead and make some Republican Projections. With Pollster.com as my guide and intuition at my back, here we go! In East to West order (estimated polling close time). I’ve noticed a lot of polls starting to shift to Romney, so I’m beginning to wonder if a comeback is in line.

Predictions below the fold.
